I've been a TNG fan since 1987, and it's fascinating (and wonderful) how it keeps drawing in new people after all this time. I think the things about it you mention -- the optimism, the sense of family, the universal moral questions -- are exactly what makes it so timeless. When I was a kid, it really helped me to see a world where differences were accepted and celebrated, and not a cause for rejection.
