I know what you mean about Star Trek's optimism. I used to really resent that when I was younger, but I really appreciate it now. Also, I think that because of its tone, when bad things happen on the show, it really weighs more than if the tone had been consistently grimdark. There are episodes I haven't seen in years that I still recall very vividly.
