This is my entry for the Character Study challenge over at
lands_of_magic. The challenge was to make any sort of mix of fanworks relating to one specific character that we love. For this challenge, I chose to highlight Beverly Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
I made 10 icons and a fanmix.

I've really tried to cover various facets of Beverly's character with this mix and I hope I have done it justice. As a spoiler warning, the notes mention things that happen during the show and incorporate some novel canon as well.
Track Listing
Healing Incantation - Michelle Sarasin
Heal what has been hurt
Change the Fates' design
Save what has been lost
Bring back what once was mine
Beverly is a doctor and it is implied that the loss of her parents early in her life, as well as living through a plague and helping her grandmother, who was a healer, is what inspired her to do so. I feel this song fits that motivation.
Widow Queen - Benjamin Tod
You’re the belle of a man who fell
I’ll love all my life
The lyrics in this song really spoke to me about the relationship between Beverly and Picard, especially after the death of her husband Jack, who was also his best friend. I kind of see it from Picard's point of view on how he sees her after that.
How To Save a Life - Jess Moskaluke
Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
When Beverly first arrives on the Enterprise, things between her and Picard start out really badly as he has not spoken to her in ten years. I feel this song kind of represents that awkward place between having ten years of silence between them after being rather close friends before that.
Godspeed (Sweet Dreams) - The Chicks
The rocket racer's all tuckered out
Superman's in pajamas on the couch
Goodnight moon we'll find the mouse
And I love you
Beverly spent the years after Jack's death as a single mother raising her young son Wesley. I chose this song as a representation of her as a mother and her love for her son.
We Can Never Go Back - Joy Williams
Remember when you loved me
Remember when I left
Remember when it hurt like nothing else
This song purely reminds me of the episode Attached and the aftermath of that. In Attached, it comes to light that Picard has been in love with Beverly for a long time and that he still has those feelings for her. It's implied that she also feels the same way but is scared to move forward in a relationship.
Dance Monkey - Tones and I
Just like a monkey I've been dancing my whole life
But you just beg to see me dance just one more time
In Data's Day, we learn that Beverly was known as the Dancing Doctor at one point and is a very talented dancer at that. I chose this song as kind of a representation of her hiding that part of her history.
May It Be - Julia Westlin
May it be when darkness falls
Your heart will be true
You walk a lonely road
Oh, how far you are from home
Beverly is a member of Starfleet and serves aboard a starship, therefore she is travelling through the galaxy. I felt this song kind of represented her embarking on her journey on the Enterprise.
Titanium - Jasmine Thompson
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
Beverly has been through a lot of hardships in her life, but in the end, she is very successful. She's one of the best doctors in Starfleet and the son that she raised basically on her own is a highly intelligent young man. She's also very determined when it comes to doing what she believes in. I chose this song to represent her will and determination.
Dance Me To The End of Love - The Civil Wars
Dance me to the wedding now
Dance me on and on
Dance me very tenderly
And dance me very long
In the novel canon, Picard and Beverly eventually do start a relationship, get married, and have a son together. I chose this song to represent that possible future for her.
Everybody Hurts - The Corrs
Everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don't throw your hand
Beverly is shown to be very friendly and amiable with many of the crew and I felt this song represents her strong bond with everyone even when they are dealing with crises.
