Reboot Challenge - Lands of Magic

lands_of_magic, we were tasked with rebooting an older piece of media as a television show. For this challenge, I decided to take on the task of designing a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. I included a cast and a soundtrack for this.
Title: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Summary: Buffy Summers is your average Californian teenage girl except for one thing: she fights vampires. Chosen to become the Slayer, the one girl who stands between humanity and the forces of evil, Buffy, along with her Watcher and mentor Giles and her friends Willow and Xander, save the town of Sunnydale from the evil that escapes the gateway to hell below Sunnydale High.
Why Did You Choose To Reboot This Work? Buffy was a phenomenon when it originally aired from 1997 to 2003. It was extremely influential and groundbreaking in its feminist themes. Despite this, there are definitely some parts of it that have not aged well. I think that a version of the show with a modern outlook but keeping the same overall tone could do really well.
What Makes Your Version Different From The Original? How Is It The Same/In The Same Spirit? In this version, I’ve cast actual teenagers in the main cast as that has become more commonplace. As well, I’ve tried to diversify the main cast. I’ve also thought about how the storyline could differ in cases where the plot would now be considered problematic or outdated.
However, in the spirit of the original, I’ve tried to include modern indie/alternative music in the soundtrack as the original show was known for. As well, I know while many shows now tend to be more arc based, I know there are a lot of people who miss more episodic based shows. In keeping with the spirit of the original show, I’d have the show be episodic with some overarching season plots.
In the descriptions listed here, you’ll notice some similarities between the original show and this reboot, but there are some notable differences.
Buffy Summers - The 16 year old blonde protagonist of the series. At the beginning of the series, Buffy and her mother Joyce move from Los Angeles to Joyce’s hometown of Sunnydale after an incident involving a fire that resulted in Buffy being expelled from her high school. Buffy is secretly a Slayer, someone destined to protect the world from vampires, demons and other forces of evil. She resists this responsibility, especially since the fire resulted in the death of her Watcher.
Willow Rosenberg - A 16 year old girl who befriends Buffy after her move to Sunnydale. Willow is booksmart, a bit timid, but values loyalty and will defend those she cares about. She and Xander have known each other since they were young kids. After learning Buffy’s secret, she decides to help Buffy in her responsibilities as the Slayer.
Xander Harris - A 16 year old boy who befriends Buffy after her move to Sunnydale. He’s known as the class clown, but humor is his coping mechanism. Xander is gay but is fearful of coming out due to his less than supportive family. His best friend is Willow, having known her since they were young kids. He discovers Buffy’s secret identity as a Slayer and decides to help her with her responsibilities.
Giles - A British man in his 30s who works as the Sunnydale High School librarian. He also serves as Buffy’s Watcher, someone who is appointed by the Council to guide and train a Slayer. Despite appearances, Giles is rather skilled in a variety of weaponry and has a vast knowledge of evil beings. He is reluctant to include Xander and Willow into the fold, but quickly relents, realizing how serious the situation in Sunnydale is.
Angel - A 400 year old vampire who appears about 18. Angel is different from most vampires in that he was subjected to a curse that caused him to regain his soul. For hundreds of years, Angel was one of the most vicious vampires known to the world, so when he regained his soul, he felt extreme remorse for what he had done. He was drawn to the Hellmouth in Sunnydale and decides to aid Buffy, originally as penance for his past, but he ends up falling for her in the process.
Cordelia Chase - A 17 year old girl at Sunnydale High. Cordelia is one of the more popular students. She is very blunt and speaks what’s on her mind. Buffy’s secret is revealed when Cordelia is attacked by a vampire. Cordelia agrees to keep Buffy’s secret and sometimes helps the group with fighting evil.
Daniel “Oz” Osbourne - A 17 year old boy from Sunnydale High. Oz is the guitarist in a rock band called Murder Hornets. He is very chill and contemplative. Oz is revealed to be a werewolf after he is falsely accused of attacking and killing someone. Oz has a bit of a crush on Willow.
Joyce Summers - A blonde woman in her 40s. Buffy’s mother who grew up in Sunnydale. She decides to move back there with Buffy after the fire at her school. Joyce is a loving mother but can be a bit protective. While Buffy does not believe her mother knows that she is a Slayer, Joyce is fully aware and has a few secrets of her own.
(I know this is kind of cheating but I could not get the idea out of my head)
Faith Lehane - A 16 year old Slayer from Cleveland who ends up in Sunnydale after the death of her Watcher. Faith is very intense and unlike Buffy, likes to work alone. She rebuffs the group’s attempts to befriend her when she first appears but eventually warms up to the group. With the Council out of contact, Giles ends up taking up the position of her Watcher temporarily.
Spike - A 200-ish year old vampire who appears to be in her early 20s. A former paramour of Angel that he turned into a vampire, Spike arrives in Sunnydale in hopes of defeating another Slayer. She has a dark sense of humour and drives a custom chopper motorcycle.
In keeping with the traditions of the original series, this reboot of Buffy will feature a good assortment of modern indie/alternative music.
